ASSIGNMENT 9: Editing Principles & Techniques

Nina Wyre's Video Critique

What work's

This first medium close-up is very well framed. It’s leading the viewer to action off the screen. This helps to engage the viewer. Nice use of head room.

This medium close-up of the faucet is excellent. It’s a good contrast of the nice soft room and dog. The battle between the dog and the faucet is on.

I don’t know how Nina did this. This dog’s reaction shot is priceless. The little dog has met his foe. Plus the framing is excellent. The hard edge contrast the round and circle shapes of the dog.

This is a good example of the rule of 2/3. This is framed up nicely. The pyramid shape is very nice too. Excellent composition.

Extreme close up is very nice and the quick transitions to the candle and the bath makes for good tension and a good climax for the viewer.

This is a good shot of scale.

What doesn't work

This changing of direction is a little jarring. The focus should be on the bath tub. I understand what Nina was going for here and it does create tension.

I think the dog is already wet. I might be mistaken.

This framing of the dog is cut off but it puts the focus on the eyes and the bubbles.

Again with the direction change. It’s a little strange.

This was very well done and thought out. I would have added the dog in a towel to give it a happy ending. Overall it was hard to come up with things that are wrong with this video. Some of my critiques are just personal opinions and just some minor tweaks to make the video flow better.
