Aesthetics and the Language of Computing

The Interface as Sign and as Aesthetic Event

In this article the author talks about aesthetic computing. The author describes how art and technology can be connected and even be manipulated by the user. A good example of this is a user interface. While function and usability is key for the user, it also needs be aesthetically pleasing. This are all equally important and this is where the human and computer meet and enter act. Aesthetics computing is a special kind of application of aesthetics. This can be “determined as a relation of three human activities, those of aesthetic, computing, and semiotics”.

The computation is the process of generating interfaces or art like in Manfred Mohr's painting. This painting of geometric shapes and arrangement of these shapes is much like a user interface. The placement of shapes or user information is a user input and the canvas and the result of the user interface is the output. In the aesthetics is the bond between the user and the screen. This can draw a user in or send the user running. A good example is Space Jam website. Of course, this is very dated and aesthetics really took a back seat and functionality was more important. The semiotic perspective the choice of what the user decides to do with the information on the screen or the user interface.

Like the Apple IMac design and aesthetics is important but it is important to understand that this can’t out way the other key features of aesthetic computing. In the case of Space jam the developers were focused on the functionality and less on the aesthetics of the website. This would give the user in the case of space jam the chance to find a more appealing website.

When I write code or plug-ins for Autodesk Maya aesthetics computing is important. I set myself a goal and get the coding and functionality working first. Then, it’s the fun part. Making the user interface simple, easy to use, and beautiful. Much like the preparation of an artist canvas and doing sketches and deciding on the composition the code is the structure of UI. This in turn makes the painting the UI. It can engage the user or send them running. This continues to semiotic perspective which is what does the user decide to do with the screen or information given. For me personally, these are all equally as important and help me to produce more aesthetically pleasing user interfaces.
